Handheld massage roller

With this project, I designed and branded a manual massage roller using SolidWorks and KeyShot Studio. Check out my process below!

sketches

At first, I sketched dozens of ideas and tried both manual and electric massagers

After these initial sketches and a bit more research on the science behind massage, I narrowed it down to only four-legged, manual massagers with rolling components, similar to a combination of the two products shown.

revised sketches

I orthographically sketched these four-legged, mostly manual rollers and received feedback from my peers.

three concepts

After narrowing down my ideas to three main concepts, I rendered them in SketchBook Pro and, once again, presented the ideas to my peers for feedback.

first attempt renderings

After rendering this product for the first time, I enjoyed seeing the product come to life, but I saw room for improvement. Specifically, I wanted to adjust the shape of the product to make it less angular, and I also wanted to add branding.

final renderings

With my second round of renderings, I revised the shape of the product to give it a more continuous silhouette. I also came up with a couple of logo ideas in which I could use the shape of the product in its branding. Because this brand would be focused on health and wellness, I turned the grip shape on the massager into a standing or cartwheeling human shape. Not only does this give the product itself more recognizability, but it gives the brand a playful personality that ties into its product category.
